Network management with Nagios

Wireless networks, just like any other network, need management and monitoring.

Nagios is an open-source host and service monitor designed to inform you of network problems before your clients, end-users or managers do. It can check many features from simple uptime over internal parameters like CPU load or network interface activity to environmental information like temperature, with the help of SNMP plugins. In case of problems it can send notifications out to administrative contacts via email, instant message, SMS, etc.).

This presenation is a guide focused on Nagios on Ubuntu, and how to use it for the monitoring of wireless mesh networks.

Long Distance WiFi Links

By using external antennas and modifying the firmware, very low cost, long distance WiFi links can be built. High gain antennas require careful alignment, that most be done using signla generators and spectrum analyzers. A low cost version of these is presented.
