WiFi Troubleshooting: Low Signal & Weak Connectivity

Some Troubleshooting tips for you to solve Low Signal and Weak Connectivity Issues...

I don't know what Wireless Router and Wireless card You are Using but I describe all the Troubleshooting Tips in General for all.

  • See around if a Microwave Oven or other Same frequency spectrum in Air like Card less Phone, Wireless Phone,
  • Login to your router settings http://192.168.1.1/ and user/pass is admin/admin for most of routers. and Make Surveys or Site Scan or Scan.. to see if there are some other Stronger Wireless signals with same Channels.
  • IF you find any other Wireless Networks with same channel like you have configured in you Router then change Your Routers Wireless Channel ...
  • Best channels are 1,6,11 to use these all are non overlapping channels.
  • One very important thing normally people don't know or take under notice. See there are different Wireless Channels Allocation in different parts of the world.Now you got an Access Point(Router) with 14 Wireless channels and your Laptops also with 14 Wireless Channels. in Country Settings.But your PC Wireless Adaptor is with 11 or 13 wireless channels.........There is a difficulty and lower connectivity.Make sure same country wide settings on Router and Wireless Adaptor.Hope this all would solve your problem...
  • You can check response time under different Packet values by using following CMD command. Go to RUN in your Start Menu... Type "CMD" without " " and hit the Enter button...Now you can see a black screen, There you have to type this command "ping 192.168.1.1 -t -l 65550" without " " and type it right after C:/documents user setting/user/ Where in command:192.168.1.1 (IP Address of Your Access Point)-t (Continues Ping)-l (Packet Size from 1 to 65500)
  • Now you can check the actual connectivity and quality of link for a wireless network connection using different packet size...

This is very helping for beginners to learn about Link Quality and what is Max packet size handling for that Wireless Link.

Problems I Was to Face on 2.4GHz Client Side Installation.

In my last post I told you result was like all the setup is just failed.
And all my money and time is wasted.


WiFi or WISP Project Failed Due to All these reasons.
  1. No Signal at first then after a little hard work by changing the location iron poll from one corner of room to other one and raising it at more high after all this very very poor signal detected in my Access Point’s Web Panel.
  2. When a poor signal detected I tried again and again to connect with network but no gain.
  3. Distance from D-Link Omni to TP-Link Omni was less than 1000 Feet with a clear line of sight.
  4. When there is a very poor signal with out connectivity at 1000 Feet how my setup going to work for a longer distance.
  5. Signal was like 3dBi. (My Experience: At least 5 dBi Signal is required for a weaker connectivity, but signal must be with a good Quality.)

    Signal Strength and Signal Quality both are different things. Strength is power of signal in dBi units. But Quality is depending on Noise or any other distortion and overlapping of other 2.4GHz frequency channels.

Client Side WiFi Access Point Installation For Fixed Terminle Wireless Connection.

As I was to finish the installation of all hardware on my end ( I was to give all the setup a name of Base Station).

Now this was a time to make my first client side installation.

  1. I was to take TP-Link Access Point and cover it in a long life plastic box then Mount the box with a small poll or pipe of iron.
  2. Now I was to plug Cat5e Ethernet cable's connector in Access Point's RJ45 Connector Place.
  3. I was to install the Power Adaptor of Access point.
  4. Now I was to stand the iron poll and access point is installed on it, Mean while I was to mak sure its small omini antenna is Vertical.
  5. I was to Open and Access the Web Panel of TP-Link Access Point. Then I Configured it to make connectivity with my Wireless Base Station.

But this was a really bad happening. I was surprised, Theoretically this setup should make a very strong and good connectivity for a 2Km with a clear Line of Sight with a very good Signal Strength and Signal Quality. But Practically this was a big problem for me. Hardly i was able to get a very poor signal of my Base Station or WISP Setup. Not even continouse signal only a blink of signal and then no signal.


I would like to share Problems at first. Latter You will find out troubleshooting or DIY works information.

INSTALLING WIRLESS HARDWARE


1- All than first I was to install a 30 feet tower on my building's roof witch was about 40 feet high.

2- Then I was to mount D-Link Omini Antenna on top of that tower.

(Never Forget to Use Safty Belt When You Going to Climb a High Tower)

3- After that I was to tighten the Surge Protector with Antenna's

4- At next I was to fix RF cable with other end of the Surge Protector

5- Now this time to Mounte the Outdoor Unit of RF Amplifire

6- Now witch cable we was to fix with Surge Protector other end of that RF cable we have to connect with Out Door Unit's Connector wich is labled with text " To Antenna"


7- Come to the other end where we got the Access Point and Indoor Unit of RF Amplifire, Here we have to Remove the Patched Antenna of Linksys Access Point.

8- Now we will use RF cable (witch was bundeld with Amplifire) to connect Access Point with Indoor Unit of Amplifire.

9- This is time to work on ethernet or LAN from the ADSL modem. Install the ADSL Modem. Run a LAN Cable to Access Point WAN port.

10- Install all the power adopters of Devices properly so there is no chance of lose connection or sparking in electricity sockets.

Becarefull >>> ( NEVER FORGET TO USE SURGE PROTECTOR >>>During thunder storms our 2.4GHz Devices can catch some of very high frequency radiations witch can lead to a disorder in functionality of Devices or those Devices could be dead at all <<< )


Now my Base Station is ready, time for client side installation. Let's Read about that in my Next POST.

Fist I have to have a Connectivity, latter i will install Client or User Management Linux Machine or Server between ADSL Modem & Access Point. ( You'll Read About this in Coming Posts. )

Hardware I Was to Purchaise for Wireless ISP or Wi-Fi in My Town.

1- P-IV Computer with 1-GB RAM
2- Linksys WRT54GL Wireless Router( Access Point )
3- Repotech 1-Watt Dual Sensing Amplifier
4- D-Link 15Dbi Omini Antenna
5- Some Cat5E Ethernet Cable for LAN
6- D-Link Network Switch 8 Port (Gigabit)
7- D-Link ADSL or DSL Modem
8- D-Link Network Adaptor (Gigabit)

This is My First Purchase For My Setup Of Wireless ISP.

9- Tp-Link Access Point ( For Client Side Installations. )

Tp-Link was a really affordable and easy available Access Point in the market to use for Client.

Reason: Why i was to start working on Wireless Internet Service Provider Project.


We Need to Color All the Town With One Bucket of Color and its Possible......

Make a research before you start a Project. Here in this Blog I would like to tell my friends that most of the things I am doing during my WISP Project are from some great and helping online websites witch holding all the information about different topics but most of those websites are not telling all the project in a sequence or space. So that's why a newbie will face problems for understanding all that.
My This Blog Writing is only a struggle to tell people how to start a WISP in an easy way without much investment or big deals. I will try my best to keep it simple and straight so normal people could also understand this Project.
As here in my country we don't have all the latest hardware specially in Wireless Communication. In my city there was allot of people who want to have a broadband Internet connection. ADSL or DSL was also not available in all City, if available that was too much costly, some areas LAN-Network Cable was running but with a poor quality. Oh' Here I was to wake up my sleeping business interests in IT so I was to think for a Wireless LAN Network. After a few days Googling I was make an initial research about the Prices, Description and Specifications of Wireless 2.4GHz Network Devices. Then I was to purchase all that required Wi-Fi or WLAN hardware.
